The book overall is a 2/4. The plot covers a lot of ground and does not do so very well, relying heavily on telling the reader exactly what is going on or being thought. The dialogue is clunky and insinuates the reader needs everything explained to them, it leaves little to be interpreted or imagined.

I had a hard time making it through the whole book as it attempted to combine too many themes and ideas from various sources. The scientific parts seemed based on cursory research that barely fit into current methods of scientific inquiry.

The opening sequence feels played out from the very onset of the book and the reader can see what is about to happen, but it's explained to them anyway.

The creatures are imaginative and their means of communication are intriguing but it's not explored or left to be revealed as the story unfolds.

The main character is an introvert but seems to maneuver social situations well and thinks quickly on his feet. His depiction is far from the lab rat name that is attributed to him early on. His character is confusing and seems to miraculously gain abilities when he needs them creating a vast array of different versions of himself. This seems to be an attempt at giving the character depth but only creates an unrelatable main character that doesn't fit into any known archetype.
