Strong Heart , by Charlie Sheldon

Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon was a very interesting and captivating book. I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect by reading the book jacket, but I was intrigued by the story line immediately.

Strong Heart is a story about family, ancestry, tradition, betrayal, culture, love, and has some suspense thrown in as well. Immediately after meeting Sarah, I wanted to know more about her background and what had brought her to the starting point of the story. Eventually we did learn some of that, I just needed to be patient! Early in the book, William calls Sarah “ornery”, and I love the use of this word; it seemed to fit her perfectly. Sarah had immediate spunk and likability.

I found it very interesting when the group started on their trek to hear the stories William, Myra, and Tom were sharing. Their tales of ancestry were intriguing and I couldn’t wait to see where the story would go. When Sarah started telling her story, it became very convoluted and I couldn’t put the book down. I wanted to know more, and what would happen next. Her tale was so intricate and fascinating. I am happy to know that the series will continue, as I’d like to hear more about all of the characters and what happens next. I definitely want to find out more about the possible love connection between Myra and Sergei, as there were hints to a budding relationship.

A few of the minor plot lines did get confusing, but most of that was because I was trying to skim over them to get back to Sarah’s tale and what would happen next. I thought at first those additional smaller plots had nothing to do with the story, but found out soon that it all came together in time.

Overall, I would rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. Strong Heart was a well written and well edited novel. It was hard to distinguish any spelling errors, and I only noticed one grammatical error of an additional comma being used in Chapter 5, nothing major. I loved Charlie Sheldon’s’ writing style, and can’t wait to hear more about Tom, William, Myra, Sergei, and Sarah’s stories and how they unfold. This is a great read for all ages, it doesn’t seem geared towards any particular genre; and it was told at a great pace. Anybody who is interested in history, cultural traditions, and Native American specific genre would be fascinated by this book.
