DAYS OF THE GIANTS by RJ Petrella is a beautiful, heart touching and an exciting thriller. The story has been narrated alternately between first-person perspective of Slater Barnes and third-person point of view of his late Father. The story is divided into six parts with each part further divided into chapters. Other than the main story, the author brings to light several issues related to health care.
The story is about a fourth year medical student, Slater Barnes, who has to make an important decision about where he will apply for residency program. He is left with two choices, either he can join the Boston City Hospital, where his bestfriend wants him to join or Academy Hospital where his stepfather Mel Garrott is the president. Slater chooses to opt for his residency at Boston City Hospital because he doesn't like his stepfather. With this decision, he loses his long term girlfriend, and also at the same time he is diagnosed to have a deadly brain aneurysm.
During his internship, he is assigned on the Accident Floor, the equivalent of Emergency Room at other hospitals. The scenes he witnesses in the accident floor are very painful. He gets to learn about the sense of public service that the hospital offered and is pretty much touched by it. In the meantime there are a few efforts being made to effect a change in the hospital which, could hugely affect the city as a whole.
The writer has done a brilliant job and has perfectly executed the narration style. Though he uses a double perspective of narration, the readers are never confused between the two. The two different narrations have their own style and are very distinct from the other.
The writer grabs the readers attention from the prologue chapter itself. The content in the prologue chapter has been well placed and it helps to instill the thriller aspect of the book. Throughout the story, the readers are made aware of the impending threat lurking on the characters even before the characters are aware of it. It adds to the excitement of the story and readers feel helpless as they cannot help the characters by warning them about the threat. I'll rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
Above all, the writer speaks about the true condition of the health care services world, these days. While several establishments are keen on providing public service, huge corporate houses are keen on increasing the glamour of the hospitals and hence decrease public service.
The book has been well edited as i didn't find any error in it. This book can be related to by people close to the medical sector and also medical students. Also people who enjoy medical thriller should definitely read this book.
