As for the discussion, I like top-quality paperbacks where they use the mostly matte look with partial gloss. Her Darkest Powers trilogy by Kelley Armstrong utilizes this technique. Gorgeous. So do the Immortals books by Alyson Noel. It's a really neat effect. The image part of the cover is glossy, while the background is flat/matte.

Like Ryan, I'm a sucker for a classic in hardcover in which the hardcover itself is decorated rather than including a dust jacket. I recently bought another Jane Eyre (can you have too many?) in such fashion; and yet another one that is downright gothically amazing. This photo doesn't do it justice, because it has illustrated paperback flaps and an illustrated back cover as well, and deckled pages.

Looks scary!!

Here's a cool cover--this book isn't scary so much as disturbing, tear-jerkerish, and really good.

I know you and I both like those Robert Liparulo books. You know what I like about their covers? They're hardcovers, but with decorated spines instead of dust jackets. I LOVE that effect!

I am your typical, judge a book by its cover reader. It's really hard not to when you think about it. The first thing that is going to draw you to a book is the title, the title is generally found on the cover. The cover art in my opinion is what sells the story and makes you want to read the back of the book to find out more. If the cover art doesn't match the back of the book, the chances are that I'm not going to give it as much attention as a book that stays true to the story that is being told.

Here's the cover of one I just read a couple weeks ago.
The cover caught me right away when I saw it and the book description just sealed it, but there's always that possibility that the cover is great, but somehow doesn't fit the book.
Sooo not the case!
As a matter of fact...as I read it I noticed things in the cover I hadn't before hand.

Yeah. I wish I still had my complete collection, but I sold them and I only have the first one. I loved the set, but the books themselves became too suspenseful after the first one, and I had to bail. The storyline was really raising my blood pressure. I do still have the first, in decorated hardcover, and I love it as part of my book collection.

I've got my eye on a new book that I might buy for October genre month that has that same decorated hardcover theme going for it. It also has a dust jacket, but it's see-through, and the cover itself is decorated underneath it. Awesome, and it has gorgeous images all over it. Also, the book itself is actually illustrated.

On the other hand, I just went to Goodreads to find this cover image, and it has 3.21 out of 5 stars, with over a hundred reviewers voting. Ergh. That's not a good sign.

Here's another interesting cover.
The storyline never grabbed me on this one, but I love the cover.
