I would provide this book a rating of 3 out of 4. This book was easy to relate to since I am married and going through issues with my spouse. Some of the same issues were covered in the book and it is very easy to follow and understand. This is a good self-help book that can help recognize problems in communication with a spouse. A workbook is provided that helps reflect on feelings and come to realizations. After reading this book I feel empowered to continue further and find other books that go into the details of fixing marital issues. There is religious content throughout the book as the author uses his own life and values as examples in many cases.

There are several examples of married couples and the struggles they faced together. In some instances the problems were fixable and in others they were not. I learned that the majority of problems stemmed from a lack of communication. People are designed and molded throughout their life by their experiences and not being able to understand each other leads to resentment and regret. I found this book helpful in teaching me these life lessons and used the workbook to find instances in my own life where I have failed to understand my partner.

This is helpful as a starting point but does not go into many details of how to fix issues and work on yourself for a happier marriage. Religious beliefs are also apparent in the writing and focus on a monogamous, traditional marriage between a heterosexual couple. There are mentions of the same concepts helping homosexual couples but the content is directed towards a specific audience. I also think that is only targets a specific culture, different cultures can have varying practices that make it harder to communicate or understand each other.

For someone living in a heterosexual marriage with only their spouse or kids present, this is a good book to use for reflection on the marriage and whether there are issues that have not been brought up with each other. It is helpful and simple.
