Health tips, myths and tricks (review)
I rate this book 4 out of 4 star
The book is well organised . It is divided into three sections: tips, myths and tricks each of which has a different focus. The reader thus gets a good idea of what to expect and how to use the book for their benefit. The first chapter gives practical advice, second discusses the common misconceptions and third warns about fake medicine.
The thing that I particularly like is that the book not only gives examples of false information but also the way it ended up presented as legitimate facts. An example would be a critique of dietary supplements described as 'miracle' that will help overweight people slim down without dieting or diet pills that cause more harm than good.
The book also point out at side effects of some weight-loss methods, such as surgery which is often glorified by other outlets.
In addition to giving an objective critique, the book also reminds the audience of true 'miracles' that can help them improve their health, emphasizing the benefits of a daily routine that we often underestimate.
All the points mentioned are backed up by scientific research by reputable organisations which is balanced in its conclusions. The research is not presented in the form of facts and figures but the author also provides context clarifying how particular conclusions were drawn. Also, all abbreviations are also stated in full so the text does not sound too complicated. It is interesting to observe how different studies developed over time.
Another way the book helps is that it points at the ingredients that can harm our health but are often glorified in mainstream media that mentions only their benefits.
As a reader I also appreciate tips on specific meals that should not be missing from a healthy diet and a strategy to how make food consumption healthy.
In addition, there are several warnings about side effects of the healthy foods such as fish or shellfish which I found surprising also due to the fact that these foods are described as healthy by default.
Overall, I think the book is a comprehensive guide to healthy diet which can be understood by people of various knowledge levels. Also, I think it is a great point of reference that will prevent readers from falling for rogue health advice and placebo medicine or products which could actually harm their health. It gives a realistic picture of what we should eat and why which is the number one step towards a healthier lifestyle.
