Bleeding Gull look, feel , fly by Raed Anis Al-Jishi is a collection of 88 theme-based poems. The author employs thoughts and emotions in each piece with an aim to make the reader aware of their individual human reactions to the each theme in a serene manner.
Grieve
Are you suffering from
The anxiety of poetry
And the reading pain?
Take my letters.
Share the bread of ink,
Sea, and the salt of the sailors’ chants
With me.
Some grief can’ end
Till it hurts you more
Than you bear to speak.
The author does not employ a lot of musicality in the writing of the poems. Rhyme and alliteration appear seldom. To enjoy the poems and actually understand the poems will majorly depend on the readers’ fantasy. There’s no repetition in stanzas and therefore the poem is not entirely lyrical. Also, each poem depends on its topic and therefore each poem is independent of another.
It took me a while to actually complete reading this book despite it being a short one. This book will require that you settle in a very serene room with no distractions whatsoever. I had to relax completely to ensure that I don’t miss a word. Some pieces were very straight forward but most required that I re-read quite a couple of times just so I could get the idea the author wanted to convey. The main character is the reader as he\she gets to relate uniquely to the different themes in the poem.
I really enjoyed how the author expressed emotions and how they are able to leave the reader in deep meditation. If you like deep poetry then you will probably have an easier time with this book than I did, I must admit that this was a first and I had to repeat the book quite a number of times so as to flow with each poem eventually.
Readers that only enjoy poems blended with musicality may not particularly enjoy this book. I had no problem with it. The heightened emotion in some pieces bolsters imagination for the reader; this did it for me. I only noticed one spelling error, “opining in wallet” instead of “opening in wallet.” Otherwise the book is quite well edited.
I give this book a rating of 3 out of 4; the book has minimal errors and demands a lot of concentration. I fail to give it a perfect rating because I have never read a poetic book before and I choose to be a little bit modest with the rating for future books. I recommend the book to those who are used to reading poetry, it can be quite complex for starters or young readers.
