Have you ever wondered why autistic people react to things the way they do? The book What is Autism? by Damien Rist gives a better understanding of the condition and how to relate to people having the condition.

The book, which is written in the form of poetry for easy understanding, explains the term autism as an unconventional state caused by different wiring of the brain rather than a mental condition. The author, who happens to be autistic, gives different reasons why autistic people react differently in certain situations. He also gives clarification on some myths surrounding the condition. An example of this is the fact that autism does not only occur in males but can occur in both males and females, though it might not be common or obvious in females.

I will first applaud the idea that gave birth to the writing of this book. I believe a lot of people need this book. Societies, friends, and families having people with the condition need a book like this. The book enlightens the reader on the condition and states some things, behaviours, and materials that can trigger autistic people to react in an unfriendly manner. Also, I am able to learn some strange terms like palilalia, echolalia, and so on.

There is nothing I dislike in this book. The book was exceptionally well edited. The book gave me a better understanding of people with autistic conditions and how to relate peaceably with them. I also learned new words and differences in some terms related to the mental health field. Owing to these reasons, I give this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars.

I recommend this book first to readers who are in one way or another related to people with autism. Readers interested in knowing more about the condition can do well to read the book too.
