Now I See by Sandra Leon-Gonzalez is a collection of poems written graciously based on themes like racism, black heritage, emotions, and fear. Divided into four sections, the poems in this book give a line-up of stories from the struggles of a Black man and forces trying to hinder his progress to a path of hope and love, dreaming of a world where there are no such differences. The theme of fear appears subtly in a manner that shows us the importance of overcoming fear.

Focusing on the sections, Section 1, Tears of My Ancestors, speaks on the pain of a soldier, black ancestors, and how the trauma still lives. Section 2, The Mirror Before Us, shows us clear skies and dares us to forge onward. Section 3, At First Sight, shines a light on the beauty of love and companionship. Lastly, Section 4, Through Heaven’s Eyes, reflects on divinity, inspiration, and a spiritual feel the poet embraces that inspires her writing.

Now I See consists of 45 breathtaking poems. There is a lovely rhyming pattern in all the poems and reading them brings joy to my heart. My favorite poem in this book is titled “Simplicity in View.” There are a lot of remarkable poems in this collection; I found it hard to choose a favorite. It felt like a journey going through the poet’s mind as she wrote these poems. The four sections are harmonized and would certainly make readers feel good. Additionally, the poet adds pictures that relate to each poem, and they all fit perfectly. The pictures add imagery to the poems and give intriguing detail about them.

There is nothing I dislike about this book. I felt an amazing connection with the poet’s words, and I am happy I had the chance to read this book. Now I See is exceptionally edited. There were no grammatical, typographical, or punctuation errors, and as this is a poetry book, accuracy helps to pass across the right message.

I rate this book, Now I See, five out of five stars. I must confess that I was overwhelmed by the author’s creativity. I didn’t expect such simple-looking poems to be so good. Sandra Leon-Gonzalez has caught my attention with her work. Sometimes, I go through this book for inspiration and happiness. Gladly, I recommend this book to upcoming poems, poem lovers, and individuals looking to give something to their loved ones.
