The relationship between a mother and her child is a close one. The love they share, the fears they assist one another to conquer, and even the compassion they inspire in strangers are simply remarkable.

A Fate Unwound Too Soon by Anna-Karen Sorensen MD is a collection of fifty-seven parent and infant poems. Through it, Anna challenges us to appreciate the babe in all of its forms. Whether the babe is premature, mature, or did not make it, she strives to make sure we know how the interaction with the babe impacts us. It also pictures what a baby would say if it could do so. The accompanying images of little ones also serve to complement the poems.

I knew this book would be great when I read the introductory essay titled “Re-Weaving Memories”. It is an exposition of the effects of the interaction with the babe, and it is eye-opening. The beautiful prose and simple language used are also attractive. I was intrigued when I realized that the images used act as starting points for different sections. The diverse formatting of the text is also visually appealing.

I loved the descriptions as well. The poems evoked feelings of love, appreciation, and even awe, in me. The snapshots of life brought to life by the words in this book are just marvellous. The rhyming scheme is also lovely, even though it is not a structured one. Some lines have rhymes while others do not.

The only complaint I have is that I did not understand the direction of the stanzas in some of the poems. For instance, in the “Winged Visitor” poem, I am unsure whether the stanzas should be read from left to right or top to bottom. Besides that, I enjoyed the book immensely. I recommend it to all types of mothers, fathers, and poetry lovers wanting to experience what it feels like to be a mother. I am glad to say I did not notice any errors in the book, and I commend the editorial team for a job well done.

Poetry is a subjective art form, so my interpretation of this work of art may not be the same as yours. What I ask you to do, if you end up picking up this book, is to approach the contents with an open mind. Only then will you experience it to the fullest. Because of the reasons stated above, I rate A Fate Unwound Too Soon 4 out of 4 stars.
