The Last Rival by Kyle Palmer

Rating: 3 out of 4 - Good, recommend it

Written by Kyle Palmer, The Last Rival appears to be an intriguing historical espionage thriller novel that takes place in the grim and dark atmosphere right after World War II. Jim Bolden and Lew Weinman, the primary characters in the story, are veteran operatives who are on a dangerous mission to hunt down the surviving members of the Nazi party. They travel across Europe, which is still engulfed in warfare, moving towards the center of America after the war, where secrets of incredible proportions lay and could quickly change the balance of power once again.

Palmer’s writing is rich in detail and also sets a vivid image. He captures the essence of a period where the truth was elusive and loyalty was brittle, which makes the story very interesting. The storyline includes real wartime intelligence that is grounded and well-researched, unlike many fictional espionage novels, which gives the book greater depth in terms of the reality, tension, and emotional impact that comes from the plot.

What makes Palmer’s work unique is his characters. Bolden and Weinman are no longer simply agents. The pressure inflicted on them due to their profession and the decisions that they are forced to make-embracing a more ruthless side of themselves for survival makes them deeply intricate characters. Palmer delves into morality and the aftermath alongside the rich inner turmoil that the characters face with the grace they deserve.
