Clara's Way by Roberta R. Carr is a historical fiction book about the building of Panama's Great Canal during the 1900s, specifically during its first few months. It also tackles the hazards, in all aspects, that the workers face in their daily lives.

The story follows Clara Tyler, a rural nurse from Ohio, her hometown. Our main character is a skilled and confident woman who loves what she does: nursing. She loves taking care of everyone in her town. A dilemma arises when her brother falls ill and requests that she fetch him in Panama. Her love for her brother and family drives her decision. She faces unexpected paths of loss, friendship, controversy, courage, love and heartbreak. How did she handle it? It is for you to find out.

Carr thoroughly researched everything included in the book. I admire the author's dedication in creating this narrative. The author did a splendid job of blending historical facts with fictional characters. I almost believe the story resembles a woman's journal. The descriptions are just right, not overwhelming the reader. It feels so real, as if I am witnessing the scenes firsthand. I love the way the author incorporates religious beliefs into Clara's journey. The faith Clara holds is evident, making her character strong. The pacing of the story is balanced and flowing. It keeps the reader engaged and interested.

I give it a 4 out of 5 rating because I found several grammatical errors, but they don't necessarily ruin the story. The dialogue and terminology used are easy to understand; hence, it is a non-medical-friendly book.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book. It portrays simplicity at its best. I highly recommend Clara's Way to everyone, especially to those needing to be empowered and uplifted from life's dilemmas I believe it will bring light to those who face darkness.
