I rate Saboteur by Kevin Murphy 4 out of 5. I gave this rating because I thoroughly enjoyed this version of this story, shedding light on what happened to this ship, the Mont Blanc. This ship carrying munitions was planned to join a convoy in Halifax. This book takes place in 1916-1917 during WWI. Many German immigrants in America and Canada were thought to not be in support of the war efforts that were lending support to the UK and France. Those German immigrants formed spy networks and some became Saboteurs who planted bombs where ammunition was held or on cargo ships transporting ammunition, explosives, and other goods to support their allies in the war. Cigar bombs were likely responsible for many sunken ships as well as countless casualties. These bombs were said to have been planted on cargo ships, and places where munitions were known to be stored.

This book allows the reader a glimpse, into the historical events that took place at this time. The events this book is based on, are likely one of many that shaped the world into what it is today. However, I wish it were a bit more engaging. While reading I would find myself having to reread certain parts to understand fully what was occurring. The book, especially the ending, used several boating terms. I would have loved it if there was a reference page, with definitions or simple diagrams that would be so helpful for those unsure of these terms. There were also a lot of details and events crammed into the last two chapters. The ending was fast-paced and I feel that the pace suited the events very well, and truly showcased how quickly things can go from bad to worse. Overall, I enjoyed reading this book and learning about the events during this time. I felt somewhat lost due to my lack of boating knowledge which slightly hindered my understanding of the storyline.
