Review of Deadly Waters: The Vietnam Naval War And Its Aftermath
Deadly Waters by Randy Miller is a work of fiction based on actual events that tells how the US Department of Veterans Affairs cheated 229,000 Vietnam blue-water Navy sailors out of all compensation for Agent Orange caused illnesses.
The story begins with Zack, a main character who was once a small countryside boy. he joins the navy with the dream of traveling around the world. As the page slides, we witness a lot of incidence. They have to fight to survive. Kill people, face death, hunger, and dreaming of this war to end. As the story goes, we witness love, hope, and struggles. Zack and his colleagues were exposed to contaminated water from flooding, resulting in dangerous illnesses such as amnesia, cancer, tumor, and other life-threatening conditions. Even after surviving from this war, they started to die. Even those who didn’t succumb to the dangerous illness still faced other health complications until their demise. These people didn’t get any compensation from the US. they betrayed them. The US Department of Veterans Affairs didn’t give the Vietnam blue-water navy sailors any compensation saying that they were not exposed to those dirty waters because they never put their foot on the land during that time so they are not affected with agent orange caused illnesses.
With accuracy and intense drama, Mr. Miller has presented fascinating aspects of American history during the Vietnam War era. Featuring an unforgettable ensemble of characters, this story explores themes of love, friendship, struggle, and courage. As we move forward, we will get shaken up by unexpected incidence. every time we hope for a better end, but end up with tears in our eyes and anger in our mind. We ended up questioning how people can be this ungrateful and shameless. This incident truly happened in our history makes it more terrible.
When I first started this story I was confused because of the dialogues. Lot of them were in Vermont, but Mr. Miller included a glossary at the end. Which helps us to understand the word in English. As I continued the page, I felt every character, their struggle and emotions, and hope for a better future. This book is divided into three parts - the start, survival, and the aftereffect. The writer did a great job with story telling and editing. We can see he has done a lot of research and study to write this book. For some readers, it's difficult to complete this work because this piece contains a lot of chapters. I would like to give 5 out of 5 stars. This book is a great help to learn what actually happened in the Vietnam War and how terribly the government and army treated the navy and sailors of that war. In a way, Randy Miller is protesting against them, through this book and trying to tell the world the truth.
