The book, Deadly Waters: The Vietnam Naval War And It’s Aftermath, written by Randy Miller, is an intriguing fiction novel based on the lives of Navy personnel both on and off duty. The story follows Zachariah Martin, who is a farm boy from Vermont, throughout his career in the Navy, the friendships he makes, the people involved in his life, and even the story of his love life. The novel follows him right up until the very end of his life. Zachariah is described as happy and excited to sign up for the Navy at the young age of seventeen, but the aftermath of events following his leaving the service can only be viewed as a travesty.

Typically, I do not read many novels from the genre of war and battles, but I decided to give this one a try due to all of the positive reviews of the book. I really enjoyed this book, and I am glad that I decided to read something that is typically outside of my normal range for reading. I liked the amount of detail that the author put into Zacharia’s story. The author was able to create a character that is very relatable, and one that readers can easily empathize with. The plotline was also very well laid out and was able to hold my attention until the very end.

There was nothing that I did not like about the book. I enjoyed how the novel took into account both sides of the war by including perspectives from the United Stated troops as well as the Vietcong. I liked how I was able to see both sides of the story rather than just one side being dominant. I also did not find any grammatical errors or typos in the novel. This is a testament to the exceptional editing that was completed to the book prior to publication.

I would rate this book five out of five stars for all the reasons I stated above. The book was very interesting, and I really enjoyed the author’s writing style.

I would recommend this book to any readers who love historical fiction or are interested to learn more about the Vietnam War.
