“To Master the Tides” by Josephine Borgia is a captivating blend of romance, thriller, and historical fiction that immerses readers in the tumultuous life of a character grappling with melancholy. Despite the initial impression of potential dullness because of a melancholy main character, as one might think, the narrative swiftly engrosses readers with its unexpected twists and turns, as the author calls these occurrences tides.
The protagonist, plagued by melancholy, navigates a journey filled with themes of brotherhood, forbidden relationships, family duty, control issues, and the struggle to let go while holding onto hope. Through the ebb and flow of events, readers witness the emotional growth of the main character as he gradually gains control over his life. The author skillfully brings the characters to life, seamlessly integrating them into their roles within the story. The plot twists are exhilarating, keeping readers guessing about the unfolding events. The author’s portrayal of characters emotions is so compelling that readers may find themselves empathizing deeply with the characters’ experiences. One of the book’s strengths lies in the gradual and realistic development of the main character’s emotional journey, allowing readers to resonate with the struggles and triumphs depicted. The exploration of themes like letting go and staying true to oneself adds depth and resonance to the narrative.
While minor errors may be present, they do not detract from the overall enjoyment of the story. “To Master the Tides” is a captivating read that would translate well onto the big screen. If it ever gets a movie adaptation, I would definitely watch it in theater, and I highly recommend it to readers who enjoy romance, historical fiction, and plot twist-driven narratives.
