“DEADLY WATERS: THE VIETNAM NAVAL WAR AND ITS AFTERMATH” is a historical fiction novel that gives an account of the Vietnam War, the tales of the Navymen during the war, and all the pains they had to endure afterward, from the very people who sent them out to war. It’s a story of love, the hardships of war, hope, strength, fear, and loss.

The story is narrated from the perspective of a young man, Zachariah Martin, who, straight out of boot camp, was assigned to one of the numerous naval ships going to war in Vietnam. The author gives explicit descriptions of the ship, and if you’re one with a vivid imagination, you can almost picture yourself on one of them.

I particularly loved how the author brought the book to life with each character. Each one is well introduced, and the reader can easily relate to them. The accents are interesting to read, and you can almost hear them speak. However, it gets a bit tiresome sometimes because one can get stuck trying to figure out a word. It helps that there’s a glossary at the end of the book that translates the accents into the proper English spelling. There are also lots of abbreviations as the book progresses, so it may help to note new ones down when they’re introduced.

Being a war book, I didn’t expect it to have as much humor as it did, but I was pleasantly surprised. It made the characters and relationships even more loveable. It’s a story of war, but it also has interesting friendships and beautiful love stories embedded in it. You can sense that the author wrote either from experience or had done extensive research.

The book is very well written; I loved every bit of it and I even shed a tear when I was overwhelmed by emotions. I rate the book four out of five stars only because it had a lot of typographical errors. I recommend it to not just lovers of fiction or historical books but to everyone who wants an interesting, engaging, and educational read.
