Deadly Waters: The Vietnam Naval War And Its Aftermath by Randy Miller is a touching and educational, historical fiction about the Vietnam War. The story follows Zack, a lowly farm boy from Vermont, as he joins the Navy to serve his country. At 17 years old, Zack left his home and family to live on the sea and fight for his country. Being a farm boy, he didn't know much about sailing or sea life, but as time passed, he got the hang of it. Will Zack make it home alive to reunite with his family? What about the girl he left back home? Will she still be interested when he gets back?

This was an educational and enlightening tale. The author gave an account of how Agent Orange, a chemical agent, was used in the war and the negative impact it had, even to this day. This story was full of suspense and action and was emotionally charged. I felt for Zack when he came back to visit his family and found America in a different state than when he left. People no longer had respect for the navy or military men and he was even dunked with a juice by a civilian.

I did not find anything to dislike about the book. What I liked most about the book was how immersive it was. The characters had good development and there was a lot of diversity. The first couple of characters took me some time to read as the author wrote exactly how the characters spoke. That was the only tedious thing I found about the book. I liked the romance between Tally and Zack. It was refreshing to read about love in a time of war and hopelessness.

I must give this book a score of 5 out of 5 stars. It gave a firsthand account of the impact war has on the lives of people after the war is over. Many got no compensation or recognition. The editing of this book was well done, as I only found two errors in the entire book. I would recommend this book to persons who enjoy historical fiction or war stories. You will be enlightened.

There was so much to read in this book. Zack's story was interesting as he went through life as a Navy officer. However, I was incensed by the government's refusal to help him and other veterans who were affected by the Agent Orange.

Like you mentioned the accent was difficult to read. But I feel it gave an authenticity to the characters. Overall, a very good review.
