The Truth Together, written in 2022 by Kelly Rodgers, is a story that beautifully blends history, storytelling, and mystery. Rodgers weaves complex material into a fictional book that grasps your attention from the beginning. Set in the early 20th century, the reader is captivated by information not often told in history—information pushed under a rug. The reader will likely find the desire to do their research and learn more about the topics touched upon in this book. Specifically, one will want to learn more about the African American elite living in Atlanta during that time period, the suffering and struggle to rebuild after the battle between the races, and the truth behind insane asylums in the South.

Effie and Fern are the two outstanding characters whose lives intertwine more than you expect. The author causes you to feel their emotions with each page and brings you to tears because you feel their pain and desperation. Yet, these same characters represent hope for the future. You’ll admire their determination, independence, and ability to overcome. During a time when racism was blatantly alive in America, these characters represented the ability to see beyond skin color, outward appearance and status.

The book was flawlessly edited. No grammatical mistakes were noted, and the story captures your attention. It’s truly a page-turner! There were times when the reader had to adjust to the transitions between time periods and characters. While these transitions could be smoother, they do not take away from the beauty of the book. Some of the characters made brief appearances or simply could be explored more. Overall, it’s a book you’ll recommend. The Truth Together is a book that will cause you to dig deeper and learn more. Most readers will be pleasantly surprised by the depth of the story and the history behind it all. I give this book a 4 out of 5 rating only due to the transitions.
