From the very first lines of "The Early Years of Squirt Malone," Richard W. Kelly transports us back in time to a traveling carnival where a young boy's heart is forever captured by a display of astonishing strength and wrestling prowess. Witnessing the enigmatic strongman's awe-inspiring performance, our protagonist finds himself drawn into a world of limitless potential, where the boundaries of human ability are redefined.

As the narrative unfolds, we follow the young boy's family going to the local carnival in their small town in the early 1900s. Our protagonist is enamored with the strong man, Andrew the Farmer Slate. The young boy gets his attention and Slate has a conversation with him whereby the strong man gives him the nickname "Squirt", which stays with him throughout his career.

Squirt decides to leave his old life behind, and without a word to his family, joins the traveling carnival. This sets the stage for a transformative journey that spans the vast expanse of America. Within the carnival's nomadic confines, Squirt begins his arduous training, immersing himself in the captivating art of wrestling and strength.

Kelly effortlessly brings the bygone era of carnival life to life, with vivid descriptions of thrilling performances, raucous audiences, and the camaraderie that blossoms among the traveling troupe. As the pages turn, we witness the trials and tribulations that punctuate the protagonist's path - the physical struggles, the mental challenges, and the ever-present doubts that threaten to derail his dreams.

A metamorphosis unfolds before our eyes, transforming him into a force to be reckoned with, a force that would ultimately lead to the formation of a wrestling group that took the nation by storm. It not only pays tribute to the indomitable human spirit but also serves as a testament to the power of belief, perseverance, and the pursuit of one's dreams.

This book is a captivating tale of a wide-eyed boy, eager to learn, to a successful businessman traveling the country. It is a poignant story that will tug at your heartstrings and will remain etched in your memory long after you turn the final page.

I give this a 4 out of 5, with no negative remarks. It was truly a remarkable read.
