"Deadly Waters: The Vietnam Naval War and Its Aftermath" by Randy Miller is a book with powerful historical research, gripping storytelling, and emotional resonance. Chapter one described Zachariah Martin's arrival at the USS Hawke, DD 894, and his initial experiences on board. The narrative effectively captures the sense of awe and anticipation felt by Zack as he encounters the vastness of the naval base and the numerous ships docked there. He encounters Chief Boatswain's Mate James McCoy and Boatswain's Mate First Class Darnell Slocum. The action occurs on a ship sailing toward Vietnam, where Zack will begin his training.

The author's writing style is fantastic. It is simple to understand and follow, making it easy for readers to picture the scenarios described. The use of dialogue enhances realism and aids in character development. The description of machinery such as the destroyers and their sleek appearance provides vivid imagery. Both the scenes and the people are skillfully established by the author.

The one thing I don't particularly enjoy about the book is that, due to my limited understanding of the Navy and its equipment, I often struggle to remember the names of the majority of the weapons.

I've rated this book 4 out of 5 stars. Grammar mistakes may be found throughout the text, and conversation tags use inconsistent capitalization and punctuation. To someone unfamiliar with military weaponry and jargon, the names and descriptions of the equipment appear uncomfortable and foreign. The book also contains profanity.

This novel captures and establishes a wide spectrum of emotions, from heart-pounding action to moments of humor, romance, and startling turns. It has a captivating narrative and leaves an emotional impression on the reader. For individuals looking for literature on historical military experiences, I recommend this book. It is also a wonderful read for those with an open mind who are interested in learning more about military machinery and their operating systems.
