Tour of Duty by William H. Coles Is a historical novel; the story took place during the Cold War in Europe in the 1960s. Miles Ballard was a physician in training. He was drafted into military duty and served in the air force in France. He was dedicated and loyal to his work. He wanted to change the training environment in the military and prepare for mass casualties. He also had the duty of being the general's physician. During his work, he clashed with corrupt characters like Springer, who was the head of the hospital. Miles was tried for his insubordination. He met many friends like Oliver, who represented non-fulfillment, and Ingrid, who represented love and interest in helping others. After a tour of Miles's diary and many stories and subplots, he chose his path in his profession and married Ingrid.

I think that the story was interesting in many parts. I believe this story could be filmed as a movie due to the various scenes and dialogues. I liked the happy ending of the story, as it brought together Miles and Ingrid. Miles and Ingrid deserve to be together due to the similarities in their characters, their love of doing good, and their willingness to help others.

I felt warm about some events, such as the relationship between Miles and the private French teacher and the ninth part related to art. I also respected Miles's personality and his commitment to his position, knowing that he was right despite the pressures he was subjected to.

I did not enjoy the scenes that talked about political events, such as those about the Nazis and their collaborators and the Holocaust, or the detailed descriptions of them. Although those events may present facts, I think they affected me and my enjoyment of reading. Therefore, I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.

The story was well-edited. I recommend this book to those who would like to learn more about France's history and the events surrounding the Second World War in the form of a story.
