Review of Something Beyond Love
Something Beyond Love, written by Wimberly N. Griffin, pen name of Slone, is a novel with romance mixed with the military lifestyle and wartime. The story is about a US Army Pilot Brad Stanley during the Vietnam war, you read about his time deployed in Vietnam and the events that occur that then led to finding out some shocking news about his wife that is back home in Germany with his two children. This book shows the military and marriage life challenges that can occur and how both sides of the marriage deal with it while being away during deployment. Aside from the romance it is a military novel in the sense it explains his time in the Vietnam war and shows the difficult situations the war brought to soldiers such as enemy attacks causing planes to be shot down, he gets injured from enemy fire, and how he managed to save himself and his whole team by having faith in God, being quick on his feet and staying calm.
When Brad returned from Vietnam he now had to face a different kind of war; his wife’s possible infidelity. Once he returned he had to investigate on his own to see if the accusations were true. Saddened to find out they were and now his heart was broken and injured more than the bullet he took during the war he was at a loss at what to do while thinking about how this is going to change everything for himself and his children. At this time, he had to make a decision- forgive and save his marriage or file for a divorce. What do you think he will do with one of the hardest decisions a marriage could go through?
There is so much in this book I loved! I enjoyed how the author showed us each person, the personality and character of each person like Brad and his wife Anna in such great detail it made you feel like you knew them and could feel how they felt at times. The ending of the book was amazing but I would love for a 2nd book now! The whole last chapter I was trying not to cry in just excitement and happy tears. I think the storyline toward the end was very well done it held my attention and wanting more.
Some of the things I did not like as much as the lengthy chapters- I felt like sometimes the chapter was never going to end even though there looked like it could have a stopping point but then it just continues. For me, I like to stop reading at an end of a chapter, not in the middle of one but due to the length of the chapters I often had to stop in the middle which resulted in having to reread a little and figure out where I left off. Another thing I had to reread or pay attention to is in the beginning I felt like sometimes when it would go from Brad’s thoughts to Nurse Susan’s thoughts It was not straightforward who you were listening to until mid-sentence so I feel like there could be a little better of explaining who is thinking when so it is a smoother read/transition.
I rate Something Beyond Love 4 out of 5 stars. I decided on this rating due to what seemed like long chapters so it was difficult to have a stopping point when needing to put the book down, and due to some wonky transitions on who’s thoughts we were reading. But overall I enjoyed this book and as a military-born child, I really enjoyed reading details of the war and what life was like over there during this time for those pilots.
I believe the recommended audience for this book would be a mature audience such as young adults, and adults men or women, I say a mature audience due to the sexual descriptions as well as injury and fighting from the war scenes. Military families as well would enjoy this book I believe because it does capture a lot of what military life looks like from deployment and stateside.
