Review of Starboard Eight
Can you imagine yourself as a teen sailing on a ship for several days and nights? Do you think it would be fun to hunt a treasure, do some adventure, and study at the same time? Well, if yes, then you can get to nearly experience these amazing things in this book called Starboard Eight. This is a nonfictional work by Brian Casey.
This story is set in the 1970s when a group of teenage boys from The Blue Water School sail across the Caribbean Sea as a part of their school curriculum. They do not go to a normal school like other children, they are the teens whose parents are sick of handling them and have sent them to this unusual school where they embark on a journey of adventure, learning, friendship, and romance. So, if you want to know more about this fun-filled yet dangerous journey of the teens, then you have to read this book.
This book is around 280 pages long divided into 42 small chapters. The author’s writing is crisp and clear which makes it easy for everybody to read and understand. I highly appreciate that Starboard Eight is the author’s first book and he has done such a commendable job. I loved the plot line and the scenic setting of the story. The ship, the sea, the sky, everything seemed dark yet beautiful. The character development in this book is wonderful. I liked how the author portrayed the teen boys. Their talks, play, and fights are crazy. My favorite character has to be Jesse. Not because he is the protagonist of this story, but because of his courage, perseverance, and personality. I also like the scenes which included Jesse, Dan, and Gene. They were cute and funny. The suspense, waiting, twists, and turns in this book is nice. It felt like I am living a teenager’s life. One of my favorite scenes is where Jesse meets his love interest. It was adorable. I admire the author’s imagination and creativity. The details and descriptions he has given regarding the surroundings and nature to truly fantastic.
All in all, I had a fun time reading this book. The book seems to be well edited as I did not find any errors while reading. With that being said, I rate Starboard Eight 5 out of 5 stars. I have no reason to rate this any lower.
This book does contain profanity. I highly recommend this to people who enjoy reading sci-fi and suspense novels. This may not be suitable for teens and people who do not like dark and perilous stories.
