Review of Apollo's Raven
Apollo's Raven is a historical fantasy novel written by Linnea Tanner. The story begins with Princess Catrin, King Amen's daughter. She possessed a raven and was able to see through its eyes. She saw her stepbrother Marrock return with a Roman army through the eyes of the raven. She rushed to alert her father, only to discover that he was already hosting two Roman diplomats. Senator Lucius Antonius and his son Marcellus Antonius were present. Marcellus and Catrin were instantly drawn to one another. Marrock had come to claim his right to the throne.
King Amen had banished Marrock seven years before for his treacherous actions and for harming Catrin, even though Catrin had no recollection of the events of that day. Before she was beheaded, Marrock's mother cursed the king. But what happened between Marrock and Catrin before he was banished may or may not have changed the curse. Senator Lucius and King Amen negotiate, and they both reach an agreement. Catrin and Marcellus find themselves as unwilling pawns in a looming conflict. Will Catrin be able to harness her abilities and break the curse? Will Marcellus and Catrin's budding romance work in their favor or against them? To find out, read Apollo's Raven.
This book was a lot of fun to read. The author did a good job of engaging readers with clear writing and descriptive language. As a reader, I appreciated the modern twist in the dialogue. She also successfully combined the plot despite the book's themes of love, magic, adventure, betrayal, and intrigue. Books with heavy themes like this are typically difficult to follow, but this was not the case for me. The events flowed smoothly from chapter to chapter. It was clear that the author worked hard to make everything fit within the context of the story.
I could not think of anything I did not like about this book. Despite being the first installment of a series, there was no abrupt halt, which would have been heartbreaking. It was also well edited, as I found no mistakes.
This book gets five out of five stars from me. It was an exhilarating read. The book's pace was enjoyable, and it was a page-turner. The author is an accomplished storyteller. Each character had a unique and distinct personality.
Fans of historical fantasy novels should read this book. Those who enjoy a little adventure and romance will enjoy this as well. However, it is not suitable for those who are sensitive to violence or sexually explicit scenes.
