“He felt the country had, without warning, begun devouring its young.”

This was the first passage I highlighted from the book. Wild World by Peter S. Rush tells the story of a young college student named Steve Logan who plans to go to law school after college. Steve had everything planned out with his lovely girlfriend, Roxy, but no one warned him about how cruel fate can be. Everything had begun to change when Steve witnessed how, the national guards, who were supposed to be the catalyst of justice, caused the demise of four students protesting against the Vietnam war. Steve saw how cruel and brutal reality is and he’s aiming to make a difference. He met Durk, a rightful officer, who encouraged him that for him to make a change, he has to get involved. Therefore, he applied to be a cop. To be one of the men in uniforms. To be one of the feared. Now, will Steve be able to change the system or will he let the system change him?

This book addresses injustice in any form possible. How it can occur in the most trusted department and how it can be done by the most trusted people. It is relevant and unfortunately, can be witnessed in today’s society. The author is also very real when he portrays in the book that a change cannot be done overnight and a heroic action can require a great sacrifice.

What I liked about the book is that it sparked patriotic feelings in me. It encourages youth like me to never turn blind eye to injustice and learn to take action when needed. Also, I liked how the author incorporated a bit of romance in this historical genre; although at first, I perceived it as unnecessary. Lastly, in terms of its readability, the author used simple terms making the book easy to read.

The downside of this book is that the progress is slow but worth it. You will get to almost half part of the book before you can finally see progress. Also, the dialogue seems to be a bit confusing but maybe it’s just for me.

With all that being said, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. Although the dialogue seems to be a bit confusing sometimes, it won’t justify the loss of a star. I recommend this book for ages 18 and above as it contains strong language and sexual content. More importantly, this book is great for the youth because it can serve as an eye-opener for them.
