Review of Beyond the Higher Ground
Beyond the Higher Ground by Thomas A. Brigger is a crime/thriller that involves the character of Tucker Mason. We first meet Tucker as he lands in Wells County, Virginia, from Denver. He was there on a huge project to build a prison. He had never built a prison before, and this was a great opportunity for him to head a project he never imagined he could accomplish. Wells County was a rustic old place that had a certain charm about it. Most of the houses and factories he passed along the way to his rental place were dilapidated and in ruins. It was nothing like Denver. His GPS led him to Mills Hollow Road where his rented house was situated, but he had a bit of trouble locating the place. He met two strange men sitting on the front porch of a rustic old house, and he learned that they would be his neighbours. Their strangeness made him uneasy, but they were just the beginning of a much strange time he would spend in Wells County.
Tucker Mason's new life in Virginia began as badly as possible, and this only served as the beginning of what I can only describe as an intense story about the dark world of drugs. Nothing about this story is particularly predictable. I love a story that is full of strange, shifty characters that run in the shadows because that offers the author a chance to play around with the plot whilst also keeping the reader engaged. Tucker Mason didn't even know what kept stalking him and interfering with his prison operation, and that type of thing keeps the reader guessing and intrigued. That's smart plotting.
The only thing I can criticise is that the narration slowed down considerably in the middle of the book. I wish that the author could have kept that fast pace that existed at the beginning of the book throughout. I think that that would have made the narration stronger. I have found that crime novels work best when they are high-octane. Their quick pace makes the story exhilarating, which only makes the entertainment value of the story high. But I won't be too critical on this point because the overall story held together and delivered high entertainment.
I rate the novel 5 out of 5 stars. I hope to read more stories from the author in the future because this was such a solid book. It had great elements working for it. The subject matter, the setting, and the characters made this book so good.
I would recommend it to a reader looking for a great crime novel. It offers everything that a lover of crime novels would want.
