The historical fiction book Beyond the Higher Ground was authored by Thomas A. Brigger. It centres on a man named Mason who, even though it is lonely for him, is attempting to get past his tragic past. I got the idea from the way the book was written that the author had experiences with construction because of how methodically the building process was described.

Mason Tucker, the primary character, is a contractor. He had never built a prison before, but he was up for the challenge when it was given to him to do so in southwest Virginia. The locals, however, didn't want him to move into their community, so they used every available measure of harassment to try to get him to leave his property. Mason, who had recently experienced widowhood, was attempting to put the past behind him and learn to live without his wife.

Mason was involved in a car accident, but the authorities didn't believe him when he claimed to have been hit by a car. His relationship with the authorities got even worse when it was discovered that his place of work was the main site for drug sales and distribution in the area. His life and career became even more challenging as a result of these events. Will Mason's situation ever improve or will he give up?

I am in love with the main character of this book. Mason is the epitome of the proverb "the world doesn't stop because of your issues, life continues," and I loved how this was expressed. He experienced a lot, but he always survives. It is something to aspire to. Every time life's unfairness knocks you to the ground. It takes a strong man to get back up. Additionally, I appreciated that the book addressed the drug problem because such problems are typically disregarded.

I honestly disliked how the character departed at the end and took the decision not to strive to improve the lives of the locals with whom he had formed connections. The book's use of some difficult-to-understand terminology also bothered me and made the reading experience at times monotonous.

I give the book a rating of 4 out of 5 stars for the reasons I mentioned above. It somewhat diminished the reading experience. The book was well-edited, and I didn't find any errors. I'll recommend the book to fans of historical fiction as well as those who like suspense and mystery.
