'Tour Of Duty' is a book that portrays life after WW2 during the Cold War. Miles Ballard was an American military doctor who was newly assigned to the US Airstation in Chateauroux, France.
His journey in France is full of new meetings that would describe the after-war life in the country, each character is from a different social level representing each different mentalities, points of view, and personalities depending on their backgrounds. But those differences converge when it comes to the horrible memories kept from the war and their fear of a new one exploding at any time.
What I liked about the book is the way how William H.Coles described, in the most realistic ways this life in which everyone seeks to suppress all the bad memories and feelings from the past and start a new life full of pretty normal feelings such as love and compassion, without hiding that fear of a possible Soviet attack getting them back to that life they try to move on and forget.
However, I didn't appreciate the monotonous storyline. The twenty-seven chapters keep going in the same line with no "vibration" no up and downs or plot twists. Compared to the period that the story takes place, I think there should have been more actions and events that suit the type of the book.
Regarding the aspects I gave above, I would rate this book a two out of four for the simple reason that the story isn't really catchy and slightly boring.
Since it contains some mature topics and cursing words, I'd recommend this book to an 18+ audience who's more interested in historical facts about that period rather than an audience who likes war fiction with more action.
