The Fox by M. N. J. Butler is a book about the story of the great Spartacus. The book begins with scenes from a banquet called by the king and all dignitaries were present. Then banter began about the war that led to the fall of the great Spartacus. Everyone, including the king, tried to get the facts of the events right, but no one had all accounts except a boy of royal descent who was present during the unfolding of this event. When the event occurred, the boy was very young and couldn’t even remember the events in detail, but he could remember the chronological order of the events.

The boy’s name was Leo. Leo had always known he had come from the family that was ruling at that time and his father was a big shot in the government of the day, but his mother never spoke of him. Even when his father died before the boy was born, it was said that she never cried. This was very strange to the boy. One day, he tried to ask his mother again after so many attempts being shut down, but his mother finally lets him have his way as she narrated their history.

This was book was interesting to read. The characters were well-developed and what was even more intriguing was that despite there being many characters, they all played an immaculate part in the plot of the book. Despite the book being a long read, I was not bored at all while reading it. I usually get bored easily with long books, but this one was different. I also liked how the author incorporated humor and sarcasm in the book as they added a twist of fun and laughter in the book.

However, I did not like how the characters were so many in the book. As if that was not enough, these characters had almost similar names. It was such a hustle trying to keep up with them and even remember their names and what they had done because some did not even last a whole chapter. No sooner had they appeared than they disappeared. Some appeared in the beginning and were not mentioned until later in the book. I had to go back and trace them to connect their story.

I would like to rate this book as 4 out of 4 stars because I did not spot any grammatical errors in the book. This led me to believe that the book was well written and well edited. I also liked some of the themes that the author put into play in the book. I would like to recommend this book to people who enjoy reading fiction and especially those of historical nature.
