"You can't change an institution unless willing to join it and work from within." That is the world of Steven Logan. He is a senior at Brown University in the spring of 1970, in love with his girlfriend Roxy, and planning to attend law school in the fall. Then he hears about Kent State, where the National Guard killed four student protesters. With the news, he decided to change his path to another profession; he became a cop. As he aimed to follow his dreams, it would create problems with his girlfriend.
The author, Steven Logan, successfully transfers his daily life knowledge into this book. He started this job with the dream of changing the dynamic between the cops and the people. Through the book, we examine the brutality of the police officers, corruption, and other illegal behaviors, and because of it, his girlfriend and his friends begin to think he is the enemy too. The book also reflects the effects of the Vietnam War on the US, showing that the author did his research well about those times.
If you search the author's autobiography, you can see that he was a cup in the post. I did not know this knowledge at the beginning, and ı was thinking, "How does he know so much about this topic ?" Then, after I looked it up, I was shocked by the news. It explains a lot.
If we examine the language, he successfully transferred his ideas into words. The explanation was smooth and easily understandable, and the division of the chapters was successful. You can easily follow the topic and also wonder where it is going. It keeps your attention on every page. I usually get bored so quickly, but I followed the story of Steven and Roxy with my eyes open for an hour. You can observe the war between morals and love.
The other point I noticed much later was that every chapter's name is a song's name. It also helps romanticize the book rather than show it as super formal.
I can only say that maybe the author could have explained the characters a little bit more. In terms of their daily lives, Outlook, etc.) I had a tough time picturing them in my mind.
To be honest, I do not like crime novels that much, but this was an exception.
I really like the novel, and I will recommend it to everybody I know!
I gave the book 4 out of 4.
