Review of Wild World
Wild World by Peter S. Rush skillfully takes readers back in time to 1970, a time of turbulence and unrest in America. Students across the country are protesting the involvement of the United States in the Vietnam War. The unrest reaches a fever pitch after four students are killed by the National Guard during a protest at Kent State in Ohio. Our protagonist, Steve Logan, decides to take a stand and make a difference to improve the world. Instead of enrolling in law school, the recent Brown graduate decides to join the Providence Police Department. He does this in order to make a long-term change to the system from within. He is a first-hand witness to the corruption that exists in the department and must make his decision. Does he give in to peer and professional pressure or continue to fight for what he believes in?
My favorite aspect of this book is how realistic Rush makes his characters. They are complex, and we watch as they struggle with complications, make their decisions, and grow as a result. I was completely invested in Steve’s fate, and each decision he made felt true to his personality. I felt his growing pains as he matured. Another positive aspect is Rush’s rich writing style. From his depth of description, readers can see the headbands and smell the marijuana. He totally immerses the reader in the experience of the year 1970. I also enjoyed the author’s straightforward storytelling with simple prose to convey a linear story.
The only negative aspects of the book for me were some occasional formatting errors that consisted of putting a hyphen between two syllables of some words. It happened often enough that I found it distracted me from the flow of the story on occasion. This error was extremely rare at first, but happened more frequently as the story progressed.
In general, this was an interesting, well-written story about a significant time in our nation’s history. I felt that Rush did a superb job of capturing the chaos and confusion of the era with lush descriptions and well-rounded characters. Except for some minor formatting errors, this book was professionally edited. For these reasons, I am delighted to give this book 4 out of 4 stars.
Anyone interested in learning about our nation during the Vietnam War, especially after the Kent State killings, will enjoy this book. It is rich in historical fiction. Much like the times it describes, this book has its fair share of drug use, fairly explicit sexual content, and frequent profanity. Readers who are offended by such things will not enjoy this book as all three are a large part of its story. This book will give the reader much to think about in terms of their own journey through life. Prepare to have your eyes and your mind opened.
