Review of Wild World
A Review on Wild World by Peter S. Rush
The book is based on the life of Steve Logan as he tries to balance between love and career, while trying to be an agent of positive change in his immediate environment. The author describes Steve as a hard-worker, one who does not give up. These qualities are put to the test severally in the book.
Steve is madly in love with his girlfriend, Roxy and both of them are determined to change their society. Steve's initial goal was to become a lawyer but he foregoes this plan for two main reasons. He sees the way police kill the innocent campus students who were peacefully demonstrating against the upcoming war and because he wants to stay close to Roxy in Providence.
Steve's journey to weed out corruption in the police system is a difficult one. He is often mocked by his colleagues as well as seniors for being the college kid and his trials at trying to do the right thing. They beat him up, exclude him from work activities, assign him unjustified punishment posts, sometimes in dangerous places with no back up and invade his home. This causes a rift in his relationship with Roxy and his former friends. Steve however, does not give up. He is able to gather evidence against them, forwards it to his trusted agents and vows to quit so as to chase his initial dream, law school.
Wild World has several positive aspects. The author addresses important events such as war, police brutality, racial stereotyping and betrayal in love in unbiased and simple way. He portrays his characters as individuals who are ready to do whatever it takes to bring change, therefore encouraging readers to be agents of change in their society. The book also lacks basic errors and generally has a good intriguing story.
However, the book has certain limitations. Some of the issues highlighted by Peter S. Rush may be a trigger for some people, for example police brutality. In the spirit of bringing change, Steve often puts his life at risk and in some instances, breaks into offices so as to obtain the information he is looking for, even ends up fracturing his relationship with Roxy and his friends. In real life application, this is a dangerous way to bring justice and the reader may become discouraged as well.
I rate the book 3 out of 4 stars. The book may not appeal to everyone due to it addressing the issues highlighted above. Wild World is recommended for young individuals who are passionate about bringing change in their failing systems, those wanting to motivate others to bring change or anyone who is interested in a love story that survives so many trials.
