Beyond the Higher Ground by Thomas A. Brigger is a novel that revolves around a man, Tucker Mason, who is tasked with the construction of a prison on an Appalachian Mountaintop in Southwest Virginia. The loss of his wife fresh in his mind along with the childhood traumas still chasing him, he moves to the location for a new start. He finds himself in a new world trying to adapt to this sudden change, living in a rented house near the site. There he unintentionally becomes curious about the history of the place, with no one to sate his curiosity. He starts his investigation, and as the story unfolds, more layers and layers of truth reveal themselves. Can he solve this mystery even when the monsters from his past are catching up to him? This novel requires patience, attention, and a deep understanding of the reader.

This book is the first mystery and crime book that I have ever read. The description is very intricate throughout the book. Every instance taking place has a unique charm of its own. You do get used to the description. The character development and the backstory of the characters were very unique.

The problem that I faced with reading this book was that the plot development was very slow. My interest in the book waned as the story progressed. Moreover, the description was too much, so much that the description overshadowed the plot itself. The book, not even once, made my heart race in suspense. The chapters were stretched far too long. The description vocabulary was very difficult, there were many parts in the story that I had to rely on context to understand what was going on in the story. This book was a challenge for me to read.

I give this book 2 out of 4 stars. Because the thrillers are expected to make your heart race and make you curious about what will happen next. This book did not do that for me. I had very high expectations for this book when I read the description, so I was a bit disappointed when I read the book. The description was very difficult for me to understand.

This book is recommended to people who want to read for the sake of reading, enjoying the slow plot development. This book is not for the people who enjoy the rush of emotions, dramatic revelation of secrets, and adventure itself.
