Review of Beyond the Higher Ground
Beyond the Higher Ground by Thomas A. Brigger is a historical fiction that follows the life of Tucker Mason. Tucker is a builder and has recently moved to a new town for building a prison. He prefers to live close to his work and chooses to rent out a house in the nearby dilapidated town. Everything about this town is difficult for him to swallow. Tucker is already dealing with the loss of his beloved wife and now he has many other adversaries on his plate. Many disturbing events are happening near his new living quarters like unpleasant sounds, graffiti warnings, and various animal parts being thrown onto his porch. And everyone who comes to know about where he's staying reacts strangely to him. Even with all of this, he befriends a few generous people that help him in many ways. Tucker considers moving to the city after a while but eventually decides to stay and face his offenders. He has a lot of adventures and life-threatening moments to face.
The author has done a mesmerizing job of describing the beauty of the mountain in the town where the story takes place. The vivid description of the surroundings has a great effect on the reader and helps to awaken the imagination within the reader. A detailed explanation of the woods behind Tucker's house is required for the reader to fully immerse in the story. And I believe that the author has fulfilled this requirement of the reader.
Another thing I enjoyed about this book is the mystery involved. Even though the beginning of the story was a bit slow, many things were happening to keep the reader interested. As the story progresses, the reader begins to develop their theories regarding the next mystery. These theories are then blown out of the water by a completely different outcome. Many times, things happen out of the blue and this adds the element of suspense while reading. The author immaculately keeps the reader on the edge of their seats.
I genuinely enjoyed the book and all I have to say regarding what I didn't like is that the beginning of the storyline was a bit slow. Some parts of the story weren't fully explained like the traumatic experiences Tucker faced when he was a child. Nonetheless, the lack of this explanation doesn't affect the rest of the story in any manner.
I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars as I found no grammatical errors or typos while reading. I found this book quite enjoyable and would recommend it to anyone who likes mystery. This book does contain a few disturbing incidents like murder and drug usage, so I wouldn't advise light-hearted people to read it.
