Review of Beyond the Higher Ground
Thomas A. Brigger created an historical fiction that centres around the life of a middle-aged engineer, Tucker Mason, who works for Doenitz Building Company. Mason lost his wife (Katherine), whom he passionately built a home with, in order to revive himself and find peace of mind after going through childhood family drama. Katherine's death felt unreal to Mason and memories of her still lingers in his heart. He tries to move on with his life by accepting a big prison project assigned to him for supervision. The project requires Mason to temporarily relocate to Wells County, Virginia, so as to be closer to the construction site. On the quest of seeking a new place, he comes across Newley's apartment on Bright's Mountain. Mason gets attached to the apartment and finds the ambience of the environment appealing to him. Not long after Mason rented his new apartment, he begins to encounter so many bizarre and life threatening experiences. Many questionable incidents such as involving in a car crash, a gunshot through his window and a sudden gas explosion in his compound. While Mason is trying to uncover the culprit that wants to get rid of him at all cost, he learns that drug trafficking is a prevalent societal issue within the prison's vicinity and the entirety of Virginia. Did Mason eventually identify the culprit? Did he find out the reason his life is being threatened? Is he able to overcome all the challenging incidents and continue with the prison management? How did Mason react to the issue of drug trading? Find out yourself by reading this book.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It is filled with suspense, unpredictable events and a bit of scary incidents that was captivating. I admire the writing technique of the author, as he expressively used rich vocabulary to give a standard outlook. The characters of the book were properly portrayed and I really liked Mason's emotional attachment towards Sally.
I do not dislike any part of this book. The storyline is well arranged and written with the use of third-person narration. I appreciate the way Thomas A. Brigger allowed the major part of this book to address a real life societal issue that affects the young and adults. He explicitly showed that drug abuse doesn't just entail the excessive use of illegal drugs, it also involves the abuse of pain medications, and that people who are physically dependent on substance use should be helped and not neglected.
For a professional delivery and a captivating storyline, I rate Beyond the Higher Ground 4 out of 4 stars. Although, the beginning of the story was a bit unclear to me but as I kept on reading, I could eventually differentiate the essence of each character in the book and get the message of the book. I found only one error, which shows a thorough and exceptionally edited work.
I recommend Beyond the Higher Ground to readers who enjoy reading books with suspense, mystery events and historical fiction. This book contains a bit of profane language, therefore not appropriate for young readers.
