Review of Beyond the Higher Ground
Beyond The Higher Ground by Thomas A. Brigger is a historical novel filled with mysteries and suspense. The story is about Mason Tucker, a middle aged man who is a construction engineer and also a widower. The building company he works with got a contract to build a large facility prison in Wells County, Virginia, and Mason was appointed to be in charge of building the prison.
Mason saw this as an opportunity to get over his wife's death and start a new life. He relocated to Wells County and rented an apartment on Bright's mountain because it is closer to his place of work. Bright's mountain was not what Mason expected it to be, but to Mason, it was home. Almost everybody he meets tries to dissuade him from living in the apartment. It is assumed the house is haunted because the old couple who lived in the house got killed. He didn't listen to their advice because the people who lives around seems to have weird behavior. However, a criminal is on the loose, and he doesn't want Mason in the house and tries to get rid of him at all costs because he has a treasure hidden in Mason's apartment. A drug scandal is also going-on within the prison facility he's supervising, and crazy events were happening to him in his own home. Mason is in great danger than he realized. What treasure is this criminal bent on getting in Mason's apartment that's he's ready to get rid of him? Did Mason survive all of these tragedies? Find out for yourself by reading the book.
One thing I love about the book is the unpredictable mystery, and the suspense kept me glued to it. I did a lot of guesswork while reading, and none of them was correct. I like the author's style of writing even though it was a bit complex for me to understand in the beginning. I learned a lot from Mason's character, and his bravery in the face of danger taught me to always face my fears head-on. I also love Sally's character. She cared for Mason even though she didn't know him from anywhere, and he is just her husband's tenant. Even when her husband died, she didn't stop caring for the people around her.
I found nothing to dislike about the book. It touches on a sensitive theme that is causing a lot of damage to people in our society today. Drug abuse isn't something to be taken lightly, and it shows how it can destroy a person's promising future and even cause untimely death. It shows why we should embrace and encourage drug addicts instead of neglecting them. Supporting them gives them a chance to retrace their steps and turn a new leaf, while stigmatising them will only make them a menace to our society.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It will have positive impact on anybody who reads it, and it also has numerous positive aspects. I loved the mystery and the character development. Even though it is in the third person narrative, it was intriguing to the end. I found no grammatical errors while reading it. This book is exceptionally well-edited.
I recommend this book to lovers of historical fiction, suspense, and mystery. It contains no sexual content but has a little bit of profane language.
