I have always wondered what fuels people to live their lives the way they do. Some are fueled by the loved ones in their lives who push them to be the best they can be, and others are propelled to escape their dreadful pasts. However, there are the vile human beings who are driven by intense depravity and intense loathing for other people, such that they seek to destroy everything they come across. Sadly, the first category is a rare gem, diamonds in the dirt. We are left to contend with the destroyers, hoping we survive their onslaughts.

‘It’s going to be you and me’ are the words that Tucker Mason has heard and repeated to himself all through his life. His main priorities have always been to settle and have a quiet; however, his life is too fast-paced for him to settle at one point. After the fateful deaths of his mother and wife, he moves from place to place, working on buildings. He goes to Wells County in Virginia to build a prison. He innocently rents a house, oblivious to the mysteries surrounding it and his new neighbors. Upon meeting them, they persuade and threaten him to leave the house and never come back. It turns out that Tucker has stumbled on things that were never supposed to be uncovered.

Thomas A. Brigger is an expert storyteller who has molded his book to fit current affairs. At the beginning of the book, the reader experiences the emotional turmoil Tucker is in after losing his wife. The author tackles a lot of important issues in this book that influences our society in diverse ways. The main issues that called out to me the most, are stress disorders and drug abuse. As one reads the book, these problems come to light seamlessly and faultlessly. The book also addresses the pain and grief of losing loved ones, as the main character loses his people in the story.

I could not find any negative aspects in the novel. Beyond the Higher Ground is an emotionally well-written book. The book’s language is easy to understand and read. The events in the book are chronologically arranged, with flashbacks and characters’ histories clearly outlined. The characters have been creatively given lives and voices with enlightening conversations, hence the book is vibrant and enjoyable to read. This book appears to be professionally edited, as I came across no grammatical errors. The book does contain some profane words, nevertheless, they fit the plot of the story. I am elated to award this book four out of four stars for the above reasons.

This book is suitable for a mature audience of teenagers and adults, as it contains some profanity and graphic details. The book is also suitable for fans of thrillers. This is an interesting as well as an educative read.
