Beyond the Higher Ground by Thomas A. Brigger is an engaging piece of historical fiction in Wells County, Virginia. It revolves around several themes including drug abuse, crimes, poverty, and love.

Tucker Mason, the protagonist, is struggling to restart his life after the death of his wife. He's also struggling with his haunting childhood of having lost his brother and his separated parents which affects him so much. As a result, Mason moves to Southwest Virginia to oversee the construction of a prison project in Bright's mountain. He rents a house not far from the construction site and tries to get along with the locals of the area. As time goes by, he realizes that he's unwanted in that community. Who wants to kill Mason? Why do they want him dead? Read more to find out.

As time goes by, Mason gets harmed and a lot of unusual things happen at his new house. For instance, he sees long scratches on his car and a heart in a paper bag. He also finds twisted vines hanging from his door which are traumatizing, among other threats. The unending death threats cause him to liaise with the local police to prove his suspicion. He takes the risk to identify and eliminate the mysterious person and in the process, he redeems a wretched society. His efforts to selflessly create change lead him to realize himself; therefore, he overcomes his traumatizing past and loneliness.

The author immerses us in a town full of legacies, drawing us into the plot. The degree of tension created at the beginning of the book wouldn't go unnoticed. It kept the reader engaged till the end. The grief and redemption of Mason are addressed.

I loved the illustrative approach which is more evident as, from chapter three, it was enough for the reader to form visual images mentally. The author used a descriptive writing style which made it easy to understand the characters and the plot portrayed in each different story.

Beyond the Higher Ground is an impressive and entertaining tale; however, I had a flaw in it. The language used by the author to narrate the story was not one of the best, it was difficult. A lot of complex words were constantly used which made my reading tedious. In my opinion, these difficult words were not necessary. No doubt that the book was professionally edited since I didn't encounter any typos or grammatical errors.

This book deserves a rating of four out of four for several reasons. One, the book reflects the life of a person disturbed by his past and also the present. This means that the story is very relatable. Also, the variety of characters with their different stories made the book more interesting.

I recommend this book to victims of drug and substance abuse or one whose associates are addicted to drugs. Also, people struggling with the death of their loved ones are encouraged to read since they will identify with Mason. Without forgetting those who love storytelling, we have lots of challenges facing people in life portrayed enormously.
