Beyond the Higher Ground by Thomas A. Brigger is an interesting book that tells the story of Tucker Mason, a man who worked for a construction company, who had just been bereaved of his wife. Tucker Mason went on to take a particular contract as a project manager in an environment far away from his former life to build a prison in order to distract himself from taunting memories and to douse his struggle with all the emotions that accompanied his loss; guilt, fear, longing and grief. It turned out that he got more distraction than he bargained for as he had to deal quite personally with the major social vice in that area - drug addiction and substance abuse. The book painted a clear picture of historical Southwestern Virginia (both the landscape and culture) especially the Appalachian mountaintop around where the setting of the story was.

I liked the way the story gradually unfolded. It seemed slow and boring at first but when I got to the middle, I was already getting the creeps thinking it was some sort of horror story. In retrospect, I think that's how much fear drug abuse should instil in anyone who knows the consequences. I liked how the author mixed the story with the historical facts of the place without making it look like a history textbook. I also love the image the book evoked. The description was very vivid that a reader could picture it effortlessly. Above all, I loved how the book kept me on my toes throughout the read. It was totally worth it.

I don't think there's anything I have against the book. The character development was top-notch as the author used flashbacks to give the reader a glimpse of the protagonist's earlier life and to justify some statements, actions and reactions.

I would rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars. Well, my reason for such high rating is that I find the book useful for more than one purpose. It's not only suitable for the readers' entertainment, it could also be used for knowledge acquisition and educational purposes as it contains historical facts, it can also be used as a tool for enlightenment on the woes of drug addiction and substance abuse. Finally, the book is very realistic as it subtly addresses the bumpy nature of life in a way that almost every reader would find relative. I didn't encounter any error while reading it (both in spelling and grammar) so, I'm convinced that the book was professionally edited.

I strongly recommend this book to teenagers and youth especially those in love with thrilling history.
