A character named James Coppi is introduced to us. He's from Bronx, New York, but he's Italian by birth; he is a Fourth-Class Specialist in the army, and he's been in the service for 14 months. When Colonel Perkins and Sergeant Abbott were transferred, he lost his job as a driver and was reassigned to the mortar platoon. During his training in Texas for Vietnam, he met Samantha Powers at a bar called honky-fonky, who was pregnant with another man's child when she met James Coppi but she confided in him about her situation. Eager to help her, he solved all her problems. The guys in the unit knew him as the guy that helped them out with some money, but when they had to pay it back, he charged them a hefty interest. The guys needed cash, so they agreed. His schemes made him a lot of money, which he would send home to his mother so that she could keep it safe for him since he wanted to go to college after returning from war.

James knew he would have to break things off with Sam one day but was unsure when and how. For his 22nd birthday, he and Sam decide to take a road trip before he leaves for war on the 25th of July. He writes Sam a letter breaking up with her before he leaves because he is too nervous to break things off face to face. During their wait for the bus to go to Vietnam, Sam confronts him and refuses to end things this way since she knows deep down that James loves her, he is just too afraid to admit it, so they agree not to break up, but give their love a chance. In Vietnam, the war is hard, and he loses a few friends, but Sam and her letters keep him going. A few weeks after returning home, James is hit with the reality of being a vet, he is taking drugs and not taking care of himself, but Sam refused to give up on him, so she followed him to the Bronx and showed him that she was willing to fight for their love, which led James to propose to Sam.

Throughout A Police Action I enjoyed James Coppi's stories, especially when he was showing off his talents at work with his friends. Though it was a challenging time for them as they were preparing for war or were at war already, Coppi's unruly behavior always made others around him uncomfortable but could never resist him because he always had brilliant ideas. That's what makes his character so intriguing.

In the book, I could only find instances where words or sentences were written in slang, so I had to spell check to make sure that they were not misspelled. Those were the negatives that made me rate it a three out of four stars , other than that this was an amazing book, and I enjoyed reading it.

I highly recommend it for anyone who likes a bit of romance and action at the same time. AA Freda captured the moments so well when they were at war, he did an amazing job. He makes you understand the hardships of war and the pain of war, there is a lot of sexual content in the book which might be sensitive for some readers.
