I became instantly curious when I came across this book. The cover had Marilyn Monroe’s picture, and the title -MY FRIEND Marilyn- confirmed the same. After a few chapters, I realized that Marilyn Monroe is the main character but not the protagonist. The protagonist is a plus-size, small-town girl by the name of Penny Parker. She wins a contest and, as a prize, she gets to assist Marilyn Monroe in her new movie. A series of events occur which change her life completely – an unusual friendship with the most beautiful woman, a drowning boy, and a mysterious, charming man pursuing her.

The tone of the book is kept light in most parts of the book. In the latter part, though, it suddenly becomes serious before it becomes casual again. This book is an entire package of glitz and glamour, romance, emotions, companionship, and some elements of horror as well.

I enjoyed the parts that included Marilyn. Her small conversation with Penny and her undercover ventures – are all gripping. It helped me know more about her. I only knew Marilyn Monroe as “the actress with a beauty-mark over her lip.” For me, this book gave a form to her personality. Through this story, I got a peek into her personal life and the innermost feelings that she experienced. Like how does an actress – who has been the public’s favorite – handle her downfall? Who does she confide in? She is surrounded by people, but still alone. After reading the novel, I can appreciate Marilyn Monroe not just for her beauty, but as a person as well.

The starting and the ending are long. I feel some parts are insignificant and could have been avoided. For example, the description of the second day (of winning) expanded over 4-5 chapters. It seems as if every conversation and action of the characters are included. I got tired and took some time to get hooked on the story.

I will give this book 3 out of 4 stars. The author, Christopher Lentz has weaved in many sub-plots with ease. The overall story is interesting to read and has some unexpected twists. However, some parts didn’t add much to the story and were long-winding. There are some minor errors, but they did not distract me from the story. I recommend this book to anyone interested in reading about Marilyn Monroe. People who enjoy novels about friendship and romance should also give this book a read.
