The Fox is a historical fiction novel written by M. N. J Butler. Sparta is a city that has two kings who are the descendants of the twin sons of King Aristodemis. Pausanios is the king ruling the Agiad line and Agis ruled the Eurypontid line. The Spartans were at war with the Athenians and King Agis had to leave his family to fight in the war. His wife gave birth to a son named Leotychides, while he was away. Leotychides became the prince of Sparta and the apparent heir to the throne of the Eurypontid line.

At the age of seven, Leotychides was requested by the Elders of the Council to join The Flock, which is a world of boys. He was separated from his mother, who loved and wanted to protect him at all cost. His time amidst the flock changed him and his life forever. News started spreading that made people question his royalty and his claim to the throne. He is set to prove them wrong with his actions and success. Will he succeed in proving himself? How will his time amidst The Flock affect him? All these were answered in this book.

The author made sure that readers understand the history of Sparta and its culture as he included them in the book. This gave me added information that made me enjoy the book. The author also wrote this book in the first-person narrative, which allowed us to feel all the emotions that the author painted in each character. Leotychides’ journey among The Flock was very interesting to read, as I was always anxious to read about this part of the book. The author made sure that all actions, conversations and emotions were described in detail which made it fun to read. He also provided the royal houses of Sparta at the beginning of the book,, and it was well arranged. These were provided to allow readers to understand who each character mentioned is and their historical facts. All these made me enjoy this novel.

There were no faults noticed in this book as it was interesting and entertaining to read. The author also made sure that historical characters were well fused with the fictional ones. The book was also professionally edited with no errors noticed.

Therefore, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. This rating is due to the above-listed points about the book. I will recommend this book to lovers of historical fiction with a lot of interesting twists and turns.
