Review of Brandy, Ballad of a Pirate Princess
Let’s set out on an adventure. Where the sea beckons us and love is worth a deadly fight. Where greed captures the souls of the wicked and justice strikes at dawn. Brandy, Ballad Of A Pirate Princess by Dan Hendrickson is the pirate adventure worth reading. Bloodshed, betrayal, and loss catapult you into a journey that will not disappoint.
Brandy, a pirate princess, has no choice but to learn how to survive in this treacherous world when her parents are killed at sea right before her eyes. With only her uncle to look after her, they try to start life anew. However, when the life Brandy and her uncle built is threatened, they must decide whether or not to return to the life they once knew. For Brandy, the decision will not be easy.
I rate this novel three out of four stars . The only reason why I do not give this novel a full four stars is because of the grammatical error. On page 70, it reads, “I think you are overdoing it for man who just spent almost a week in bed…” I would not rate the novel any lower than three stars because it is a great read. There are action scenes that will have you cheering and developments that bring tears to your eyes. Dan Hendrickson does a great job developing Brandy’s character and building up the story to the climax with an exciting twist. However, some action scenes would have benefited from more details.
Dan Hendrickson’s writing style is something that I believe takes some getting used to. However, after a few chapters, I found myself engrossed in the story and fully accustomed to the unique writing style I would describe as reading a play write or show script. An example of this is on page 137 “Captian Joshua and Davonte are seated at the table, where he has several documents spread out and is signing them. John, Jacob and Ralphie are standing in front of the table waiting for him to say something.”
While this novel is a fantastic pirate adventure, it is not for everyone. This novel has excessive foul language, violence, sexual and religious content. While the sexual content is not overly explicit, some scenes talk about body parts, making love, and having sexual desires. In terms of religious content, this novel frequently talks about Jesus and the characters having faith in him, “Jesus walked out to his disciples on a stormy night like this one, and I am positive that he did not ask the Sea of Galilee for permission. He got his permission from the One who tells all the seas what to do. Mr. Austin, give the order for the men to hold tight and pray. I will too.” (p.174). I believe that the novel would appeal to believers of Christ who also enjoy a pirate adventure. However, those who are not religious can also enjoy this novel since the main focus is on adventure.
