Review by marianarafono16 -- The God Child
If you were to name some of the most important people that ever walked the earth, you would probably think about men of science such as Albert Einstein and H.G. Wells, spiritual guides like Mohammed, Jesus, Moses and Buddha, great anthropologists like Margaret Mead and Sigmund Freud or perhaps politicians like Eleanor Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln or maybe war commanders such as Hitler and Joan of Arc and artists like Michaelangelo, William Shakespeare or Beethoven. But what happens when all of these characters are brought back to life by a superior being and challenged to live a month on modern-day Earth? Will they like how their legacy passed on to their descendants or will they try to correct their mistakes?
This is the story brought to you by Stuart Rawlings: a tale made of humour, sarcasm and thought-provoking satire. Rawlings’ writing is funny and incredibly intelligent, which makes for this to be a fast-paced book that will leave you wanting more. It shows a deep knowledge of history, politics, religion and all the problems intertwined in them. While for some it may be bold to bring all of these characters to life and assume to know their thoughts, the author does so very naturally, as if he knew them personally.
The only downside was that sometimes the existence of the Little Girl - a character with almighty powers that brought all of the others back to life - seemed to lead to a very quick solution of everyone’s problems, making it seem too easy to deal with deep-rooted issues in cultures around the world. As a story with so much depth and insight into culture and religion, I was expecting more of a battle to change the thoughts and minds of those in charge, rather than how easy this was.
All in all, I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars, since it pinpoints the problems with today’s societies (whether they are wars in the Middle East, women’s discrimination, global warming and Trump’s Administration, to name a few) in a humorous, straight to the point manner, that doesn’t bother the reader with subtlety.
I do believe The God Child is a book everyone should read (not only for its witty writing but also to increase their overall knowledge). However, some readers might be offended by the religious and political criticism manifested throughout the entire book. As the author himself warns on the preface, members of rigid religious communities or Trump supporters shouldn’t read it. If, on the other hand, you are just looking for a light sarcastic read, then prepare yourself to follow these characters and their beliefs on a journey to review our world’s current shape.
