Lily White Lie, by Connie Chappell, is the 3rd book in the Wrenn Grayson Mystery series. Wrenn Grayson who is a part-timer at city hall and also a historian for hire lives in Havens, Ohio. She along with a family friend Bret Kilmore solves a complex puzzle thrown at them.

The story starts with Wrenn's husband being away from home on a trip to the mountains during thanksgiving. An unexpected visit from his best friend Bret changes all her plans for the coming days. What follows is the series of a delicately presented blend of mind game and action-filled moments.

The author is successful in keeping the suspense almost until the end. It is a thriller which keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout until it reaches the climax.

Wrenn, being a historian or a research historian is one of the best parts of the story. In this story, she goes about finding the ancestry of a pocket watch in a church. As the story continues these two different mysteries cross path and go further hand in hand. The untangling of the riddle happens very smoothly at the end of the story. The writer certainly has a knack for smooth transitional writing.

The character of Bret Kilmore is also well written. He is a mysterious guy who has many secrets to keep. Here the writer has done a commendable job of showing the hidden yet strong emotions of every character present in the story. Be it, love, passion, sadness, hate and sincerity, every emotion is respected and represented well within the story.

My rating for the book is 3 out of 4. The first reason for one less than full marks is the length and need for more explanation in a few parts of the story. A reader would thoroughly enjoy the story while reading but may also need more details in certain situations. One more reason is the complexity of the mystery. The beginning of the story increases your expectation of it being a complex mystery which, later as the story continues turns out to be a simple one.

This book is a good read for readers of all ages except for children. It has been written in simple language, easy to understand with no grammatical errors. Those who love reading mystery would thoroughly enjoy this book. People who are expecting exciting actions sequences would get a little disappointed as the story is developed more based on research and rearranging the facts, finding hidden meanings, similar to solving a riddle.
