Los Vuelos del Deseo by Manelick de la Parra is a fictional story full of magic and truly intense emotions. It is focused on two completely opposite sisters, Ana and Alicia, and their family. Both sisters have very similar appearance, but their personalities are very different, while Alicia tries to have a correct and socially decent life, Ana is reckless and rebellious. Through the story we can appreciate some memories of their childhood days together and how their different behaviors are reflected in the future events in their lives.
At first, it might seem like the kind of book that is heavy and tedious to read and follow, but the plot is actually very interesting and engaging. Manelick de la Parra’s writing shows a level of maturity and makes lots of jumps in time along the story, it can go from the present to the past very quickly, which can cause confusion when reading. However, this confusion is part of the appeal of the book and is easy to get used to it, his way to organize the timeline is unusual and reminded me of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's writing, truly amazing. I recommend to be fluent in spanish, because there are a lot of metaphors and words, that even having spanish as my mother language I had some trouble understanding.
Although, even if it's not tedious and boring, it's not a light read either, but it is worth it, it's tragic, beautiful and it touches many important and dark topics such as rape and pederasty. The characters are strong and brave women who go through all conflicts in life living in a (even more then the one we live in) male chauvinist society in a small town of the Huasteca region in Mexico. When one of the sisters reaches puberty and has body changes, starts experiencing a sexual awakening that comes with conflicts in the way certain people in town and even people in her family see and treat her.
The book contains obscene language very repeated from beginning to end and graphic descriptions in some delicate scenes that are suggested along the story, since is important for the central theme.
I would recommend this book if you like dramatic stories and mistery, since you'll have to put together the story like it was a puzzle because of the jumps in time I mentioned before.
I rate Los Vuelos del Deseo by Manelick de la Parra 3 out of 4 stars. I think it was greatly written and edited, although, sometimes is confusing but as I have said before, it's the appeal of the book so I don't criticize it. Knowing this is the author's first novel makes me feel curious about his others creations, it truly kept me hooked. Highly recommended.
