Beyond The Higher Ground by Thomas A. Brigger

Beyond The Higher Groundis a novel by Thomas A. Brigger, about a man who has had bad experiences during his life from a very tender age. Tucker Mason, is a man from Ohio, who has gone through a lot of excruciating circumstances, that have left him in an afflicted state of mental well being, like losing a brother at an early age and having been blamed for it, and going through the effects of his parents' divorce, losing his mother to cancer, and sadly as if not enough his wife Katherine, who was always appearing in his thoughts and dreams as Mason went through his reminiscence of the blissful short lived marriage they were robbed of by death.

Mason occupied himself with the demands of his job as a project manager at a company called Doenitz Building Company, which kept him up and busy much to the effect of never having to stay in the house he and Katherine called home back in Denver, but travelled to where ever he was assigned to. It is on one of his assignments of a prison construction project in Wells County, Virginia that he goes through yet another excruciating experience ever in his entire career. Tucker Mason realizes that the inhabitants of Bright's mountain were not only all unwelcoming but secretive.

Deep down in the neighbourhood where he rented a house, lay a history of lineage and inherited monopolisation of land, which was used for moonshining and a series of murderous and unloyal generations that evolved the family business into a drug dealing business. Tuck finds himself between a dilemma as to whether to mind his own business of the low creek maximum security prison and leave as usual or dig deep into the actual causes of the bad reception and weird events in the neighborhood.

Drug abuse is one the most destructive and addictive habits that has cost humanity lives and generations of dismantled families. Divorce is also a devastating ill that has caused so much damage to the victims therein that have no part taking in the acrimonious decisions that their parents end up making due to their differences and misunderstandings in the stressful circumstances of life. Beyond The Higher Ground, brings forth such themes, touching on issues stil bedeviling our modern society. The implications that divorces and drug abuse have on the lives of those involved and their loved ones are so devastating.

The way Thomas A. Brigger describes the way in which Mason grew, and the untimely death of those that he was close to, the bad reception by the peope in Bright Mountain potrays Mason as if he had a cursed life, but the transitioning of his gloomy like life into a positive minded and self sacrificing person seeking to assist those affected directly ad indirectly by Drug abuse, like Melanie and Jenna, is what i liked most.I also liked the fact that Melanie did survive from the collapse caused by substance abuse that almost claimed her life, it changed the mood that was overshadowed by the dilapitated residence, deaths and murder in the novel. This novel is a good read for adults, but not children. It can help teach the society not to be judgemental about people who find themselves trapped in the dreadful world of drug abuse, and try to help them recover from it.

Overall the book is a good read, however if you are a person who dislikes swearing, the book contains some profane language, in the characters' speech. But because the story has a positive ending and attempts to conscientize the reader on the ills that substance abuse and divorces bring upon the immediate family members of the victims and society at large, i say its a must read, i rate it a 4 out of 4 stars.
