Review by tmrobinson17 -- Dagger's Destiny by Linnea Tanner
Imagine having to choose between the love of your life and your father. Could you do it? In Dagger’s Destiny by Linnea Tanner, this choice is something that Catrin, a Celtic princess, must make. When Catrin falls in love with Marcellus, a Roman, her father feels she has betrayed her people and him. Before long, they discover she has altered a curse that was put on her father by Rhan, a wicked sorceress once married to the king. With Marcellus’s help, she must attempt to rewrite her fate. If she fails, she risks losing her family and people at the hands of Marrock, her estranged brother.
King Amren, Catrin’s father, provides her with an opportunity to redeem herself. She must train as a warrior with Ferrex, a young warrior who risks his fate to help Catrin. However, in exchange for this chance, Catrin must put her connection with Marcellus to the test, as her father attempts to negotiate with him. Once Marrock learns of this and decides he must take it upon himself to ensure that his plan is carried out. Will Catrin and Marcellus’s forbidden love be able to save her and end the threat of war in Britannia, or will the Cantiaci kingdom crumble? Will Rhan’s curse come to fruition, or will Catrin change her fate?
This book is incredible. Once I started reading, I did not want to put it down. I finished this chapter in The Curse of Clansmen and Kings series within two days. Tanner combines the historical plight of the Cantiaci, a Celtic tribe living in Britannia before the Roman invasion, with a plot that is sure to captivate her readers. Dagger’s Destiny has romance, action, magic, and suspense all wrapped up in 53 chapters. While I have not read the first book in the series, I could still keep up with the plot. I cannot wait to get my hands on the remaining books in this series.
My favorite thing about this book was the variety of characters and the development they each went through. It is tough to keep up with the development of secondary characters, but Tanner did an exquisite job. All had unique stories that piled on to elevate the storyline. However, these names can be hard to keep up with, as there are many of them. Luckily, Tanner supplies a list of characters at the end of the book. This addition proved useful when trying to remember who everyone was.
There are many sensitive topics in this book that one should know before reading it. The storyline includes rape, murder, patricide, incest, profanity, and erotic content. While the content adds to the plot and Catrin’s story, it may be unsuitable for certain age groups and audiences. I did not have issues with these topics and thus rate Dagger’s Destiny by Linnea Tanner 4 out of 4 stars. If you feel that you would be uncomfortable reading a book with these topics, I do not recommend it to you. It is a book suited to mature audiences but is still a good book worthy of reading if you do not mind the sensitive topics.
