Conflict on the Yangtze by Greg Kater is set in the middle of the 20th century. The struggle for power between the Chinese government and the communists has made it easy for gangs and corrupt, ruling and economic elite to establish their laws and conduct illegal smuggling rings that traverse the whole globe. The trail leads back to China and a team of reconnaissance agents from Britain, the United States of America and Australia team up to uncover the operation and dismantle the cabal facilitating this smuggling operation.

The team is cast in the middle of war-torn China. Permeates this uncharted terrain with the help of indispensable, indigenous citizens and authorities. They try to uncover this syndicate whose members seem to be hiding in every faucet of influence in the tumultuous country, beyond its borders across various continents and Islands. They prove to be equally formidable and vicious in their endeavor to protect their interests.

Greg cater brings out a myriad of characters rich in background and tailored to facilitate an enthralling tale full of laughter, suspense, and relatability. He masterfully paints the psychological state of the villains and heroes to bring out the motivations and predicaments they face throughout the narrative. The detail with which the exotic terrains are described gives the reader as vivid a picture as is possible without having had the chance to witness it themselves.

In particular, I liked the way Greg Kater holds your attention and makes you have a stake in the success of the heroes of this story. He takes you with him from the start to the final page of the book. The story is as humorous as it is suspenseful. It tackles a reality that is quite familiar throughout the world where chaos breeds avenues for profit for unscrupulous groups who thrive in the face of unrest and lawlessness. The sacrifice the security individuals and civil citizens make to take on these dangerous forces.

I rate this book 4 out of 4. It captures the reader’s attention and rewards it accordingly with action, humor and creative twists. Even though it is a work of fiction it tackles real issues and the characters are representative of actual individuals and organizations that exist in the world today.

I would recommend this book to readers of all ages. It would serve to enrich the vocabulary of young readers without overwhelming them. The adventure and humor therein would entertain older audiences. It is neither profane nor obscene making it perfectly suitable for all audiences.
